|
The
Detroit Society of Women
Painters and Sculptors aims
for high achievement
among
its many members by holding
juried exhibitions, presenting
interesting
and informative
programs and encouraging art
students.
DSWPS
HISTORY - According
to records stored at
the Burton Memorial Library
in Detroit,
the Detroit Society of Women
Painters and Sculptors is
one the oldest
self-sustaining women's
art organizations in the
USA. It was organized on
February 23, 1903.
The
MISSION of
the DSWPS today
is, as it was at it's inception in
1903, to quicken
interest in
the art movements of the day, to
stimulate active work
and mutual
helpfulness among
its members and to award an
annual scholarship to a
qualified woman student attending
art classes in an accredited
college.
Meetings
are generally held
on the third
Thursday of
the month from
September to May. Meeting
locations are rotated
about the Detroit
Metropolitan Area. Meetings include
a business meeting
and an edu-
cational or inspirational
program.
DSWPS
welcomes new members
who are interested in the
promotion of art
and who wish to
participate in the society's
activities.
